Abstract:

The symbolism of the wedding feast for the arrival of God's Kingdom enables us to read more deeply into the evangelist's intention. John's Gospel presents Mary as the mother who encourages her Son to perform an action that will start a struggle to change a religious system and bring about the presence of God's Kingdom. The mother will be present on Calvary in the decisive hour of her Son's struggle; there, her own hour will arrive when by the express wish of her Son she will become mother again. Mary's role as mother of Christians struggling to change the world will have a double dimension patterned after Cana: to present the needs of Christians to her Son and to make them aware of her Son's message.
